The top SEO companies in the USA include large national agencies like WebFX, Ignite Visibility, Victorious, Seer Interactive and NP Digital, plus strong specialists for ecommerce (OuterBox, Inflow), law firms (Hennessey Digital, Juris Digital), home services (Hook Agency, Blue Corona), B2B SaaS (Directive, SimpleTiger) and content or digital PR (Siege Media, Fractl). Below you will find 100 US based SEO agencies grouped by type and by region, with each one’s website, headquarters and main focus, plus a simple guide to choosing the right one.
There is no single “best” SEO company. The best agency for a local plumber is not the best agency for a Fortune 500 retailer. That is why this list is sorted by the kind of business each agency serves best, not by a fake score.
Important: The numbers in the tables are only there to make the list easy to read and count. They are not a ranking. No agency paid to be listed, and no agency was moved up or down for any reason.
How We Chose These 100 SEO Companies
Many “top SEO company” lists are copied from older lists. They still include agencies that closed, merged or moved overseas years ago. Some put the publisher’s own agency at number one. We wanted a list you can trust, so we used a simple, open process.
- Shortlist from public sources. We started with agencies that show up again and again in public directories and review sites such as Clutch, DesignRush and UpCity, in industry roundups, and in search results for SEO agency terms across the US.
- Check that the agency is real and active. We visited each agency’s own website in 2026 and confirmed it is live and still selling SEO or search services.
- Check the US headquarters. We kept only agencies whose own site or a trusted public source shows a US headquarters or main US office. Global agencies with a US head office are included.
- Check the main focus. We wrote the “Main focus” column from what each agency says it does on its own website, in plain words.
- Remove anything we could not confirm. If we could not confirm the headquarters or found that an agency had closed or merged, we left it out. For example, Portent’s website now says the agency was closed by its parent company in May 2024, so it is not on this list. Cardinal Digital Marketing now says it operates as Power Digital’s healthcare division, so we list Power Digital instead.
- Leave out claims we cannot prove. We do not show founding years, revenue, team size, ratings, awards, client lists or prices. These change often and are easy to fake. Check them yourself on the agency’s site and on review platforms before you hire.
Agencies change fast. Offices move, teams merge and services shift. Treat this list as a strong starting point, then do your own checks using the questions later in this guide.
What Is an SEO Company?
An SEO company (or SEO agency) is a business that helps your website get more visits from search engines like Google and Bing, and now also from AI answer tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The goal is not just traffic. The goal is the right visitors who turn into leads, calls or sales.
Most US SEO companies offer some mix of these services:
- Technical SEO: site speed, crawling, indexing, site structure, schema markup and fixing errors.
- On-page SEO: page titles, headings, content updates and internal links.
- Content SEO: keyword research, content plans and new articles or landing pages.
- Off-page SEO: digital PR, link building and brand mentions on relevant sites.
- Local SEO: Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews and location pages.
- AI search optimization (GEO or AEO): making your brand easy for AI tools to understand, trust and cite.
- Reporting: tracking rankings, traffic, leads and revenue from organic search.
SEO agency vs SEO consultant vs digital marketing agency
- SEO agency: A team focused mainly on search. Good when SEO is your main growth channel.
- Digital marketing agency: Offers SEO plus PPC, social, email and web design. Good when you want one partner for many channels.
- SEO consultant: One expert or a very small team. Good for audits, strategy and training your in-house staff.

Which US cities have the most SEO agencies on this list?
On this list, the biggest clusters are in California (San Diego, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area), New York City, Chicago, the Denver and Colorado Springs area, and the Salt Lake City and Lehi area in Utah, often called “Silicon Slopes”. Florida also has a strong group, from Miami and Boca Raton to Sarasota and St. Petersburg.
How to Choose the Right SEO Company in the USA
Picking an SEO company is a big decision. SEO takes months, so a bad choice costs you time as well as money. Use these steps to narrow your list from 100 to the one that fits you.
1. Start with your goal, not the agency
Write down what success looks like in one sentence. For example: “More booked calls from people in our three service cities” or “More demo requests from mid size US companies”. This tells you which group in this list to look at first.
2. Match the agency type to your business
- Local service business: start with the local or industry specialist tables.
- Online store: start with the ecommerce table.
- Software or B2B: start with the B2B and SaaS table.
- Large brand, many sites or many countries: start with the enterprise table.
- Strong site but weak authority: add an agency from the content and digital PR table.
3. Look for proof in your industry
Ask for case studies from businesses like yours. Look for clear before and after numbers that the agency can explain, and ask if you can speak with a current client. Real proof is specific. Vague claims like “we 10x’d traffic” without context are not proof.
4. Check reviews on more than one platform
Read reviews on Clutch, Google, G2 or UpCity and look at the detail, not only the star score. Look for reviews that mention communication, reporting and what happened after month six. Read the critical reviews too, and see how the agency replied.
5. Ask how they handle AI search
In 2026, more people get answers from AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. A modern SEO company should explain how it helps your brand show up and get cited in these tools, for example through clear content, strong entity signals, structured data and mentions on trusted sites. Be careful of agencies that sell AI search as magic. It is built on the same basics as good SEO.
6. Understand who will do the work
Ask who your day to day contact is, how many clients they handle, and whether any work is outsourced. Outsourcing is not always bad, but you should know about it.
7. Agree on reporting before you sign
Decide which numbers matter: leads, sales, calls, organic revenue, rankings for key terms and AI visibility. Ask to see a sample report. Good reports explain what changed, why, and what happens next.
15 Questions to Ask an SEO Company Before You Hire
- What would you focus on in the first 90 days for our site, and why?
- Can you show case studies from our industry or business size?
- Can we talk to one or two current clients?
- Who will work on our account each day, and what is their experience?
- Do you outsource any part of the work, such as content or links?
- How do you approach technical SEO for a site like ours?
- How do you find and choose keywords, and how do you match them to search intent?
- How do you earn links or mentions, and can you show examples?
- How do you help brands show up in AI Overviews and AI chat answers?
- What will you need from our team (content approvals, developer time, access)?
- Which numbers will you report on, how often, and in what format?
- How long before we should expect to see early signs of progress?
- What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
- What is the contract length and the notice period to cancel?
- Who owns the content, accounts and data if we stop working together?
Red Flags to Watch For
Google’s own guide on hiring an SEO says clearly that “no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Use that as your first filter. Here are other warning signs:
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed traffic numbers. No agency controls Google.
- Secret methods. If they cannot explain what they do in plain words, walk away.
- Cheap bulk links. Offers like “500 backlinks for a low price” usually mean spam links that can hurt you.
- Exact match anchor text everywhere. Natural links use brand names, URLs and normal phrases, not the same keyword again and again.
- Reports with rankings only. Rankings for terms no one searches do not pay the bills.
- They want to own your accounts. You should own your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, domain and website.
- Long lock in contracts with no exit. Be careful with long contracts that have no performance review or way out.
- Copy and paste proposals. If the proposal could fit any business, they have not studied yours.
- Mass AI content with no editing. Large amounts of thin, unedited AI pages can harm your site quality.
- Fake reviews or made up awards. Check awards on the awarding site and read reviews on more than one platform.
How Much Do SEO Companies in the USA Charge? Pricing Models Explained
Prices vary a lot based on your site size, your competition, your industry and how much work is included. We do not list prices for any agency here, because prices change often and many agencies quote per project. Instead, here are the common pricing models you will see and what each one is good for.
| Pricing model | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A fixed fee each month for ongoing SEO work | Most businesses that want steady, long term growth | Unclear scope. Ask for a list of monthly tasks and deliverables. |
| Project based | A one time fee for a set job, like an audit or migration | Audits, site migrations, technical fixes, content projects | Projects that end with a report but no help to put it into action |
| Hourly consulting | You pay for expert time by the hour | Strategy, training, second opinions, in-house team support | Hours adding up without clear outcomes |
| Performance based | Fees tied to rankings, leads or revenue | Rare cases with very clear tracking | Agencies chasing easy, low value keywords to hit targets |
| Packages (tiers) | Set plans, often for small businesses | Small local businesses with simple needs | One size fits all work that ignores your market |
| White label | An agency does SEO under another agency’s brand | Agencies and resellers | You may never speak to the people doing the work |
Tip: Ask every agency on your shortlist to price the same scope. That is the only fair way to compare quotes. Very low prices often mean very little real work. Very high prices should come with senior people and clear deliverables.
How Long Does SEO Take? A Realistic Results Timeline
Google’s guide on hiring an SEO says that in most cases, SEOs need four months to a year to help a business first make improvements and then see possible benefits. Here is a general picture of what that time often looks like. Every site is different, so treat this as a guide, not a promise.
| Time frame | What usually happens | What you can measure |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Audit, keyword research, goals, tracking setup, quick technical fixes | Tracking working, a clear plan, list of priorities |
| Months 2 to 3 | Technical fixes go live, key pages improved, first new content published | Pages indexed, small ranking moves, better click rates |
| Months 4 to 6 | Content and links build up, local signals grow | More keywords in the top 20, early traffic and lead growth |
| Months 6 to 12 | Compounding results from content, authority and fixes | Steady organic leads or sales, more top 10 terms, AI citations |
| 12 months and beyond | Scale what works, defend rankings, expand to new topics | Organic search becomes a reliable growth channel |
New websites, very competitive industries (like law, finance or insurance) and sites with past penalties usually take longer. Sites with strong brands and simple technical fixes can move faster.
In-House SEO vs Hiring an SEO Agency
You do not always need an agency. Some companies do better with an in-house SEO, and many large companies use both. Here is a simple comparison.
| Factor | In-house SEO | SEO agency |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge of your business | Deep, works on your brand every day | Needs time to learn your business |
| Range of skills | Limited to the people you hire | Access to technical, content, PR and data specialists |
| Speed to start | Slow, hiring can take months | Fast, can start in weeks |
| Tools | You pay for each tool | Usually included in the fee |
| Fresh ideas | Can get stuck in old habits | Sees what works across many clients |
| Control | Full control and priority | Shared attention across clients |
| Best for | Large sites with constant SEO work | Small to mid size teams, or to support an in-house lead |
A common hybrid: Hire one in-house SEO lead who owns the strategy and works with your developers and writers, then use an agency for specialist work like technical audits, digital PR or content at scale.
Step by Step: How to Hire an SEO Company
- Set your goal and budget range. Write your main goal and the most you can spend each month for at least six months.
- Collect your data. Get access to Google Search Console, Google Analytics and your Google Business Profile ready to share.
- Shortlist 3 to 5 agencies. Use the group tables above to pick agencies that match your business type.
- Check their own proof. Read case studies, reviews and the agency’s own blog. An agency that cannot explain SEO clearly on its own site is a warning sign.
- Hold discovery calls. Use the 15 questions in this guide and take notes.
- Ask for a written proposal. It should include goals, a 90 day plan, deliverables, reporting, price and contract terms.
- Compare like for like. Line up the proposals side by side on the same scope.
- Call references. Ask past or current clients what results they saw and how the agency communicated.
- Start with clear terms. Agree on account ownership, a review date (for example at 90 days) and how either side can end the contract.
- Review often. Meet monthly, review results against your goal, and adjust the plan together.
Common Mistakes When Hiring an SEO Agency
- Choosing on price alone. The cheapest offer often costs more later in cleanup work.
- Hiring a generalist for a specialist market. A law firm or medical practice often does better with an agency that knows that industry.
- Expecting results in 30 days. SEO builds over months. Plan your budget for that.
- Not giving the agency access or approvals. Many SEO projects stall because the client cannot publish changes. Plan developer and writer time.
- Chasing link volume over relevance. One link from a trusted site in your field beats dozens of links from unrelated sites.
- Ignoring local and AI search. For many businesses, map results and AI answers now drive as many leads as classic blue links.
- Tracking the wrong numbers. Measure leads, sales and revenue, not just traffic and rankings.
- Giving up the account ownership. Always keep ownership of your domain, analytics and business profiles.
What Good Off-Page SEO Looks Like in 2026
Every SEO company on this list will talk about authority. Here is what good off-page work should look like, so you can judge their plan.
- Relevance over volume: Links and mentions from sites your customers read, in your industry or your city.
- Useful content earns links: Original data, guides, tools and expert comments that other sites want to cite.
- Natural anchor text: Mostly brand names, URLs and normal phrases, not the same exact match keyword.
- Brand mentions count: Mentions on trusted sites, reviews and forums also help AI tools understand and trust your brand.
- Local signals: Consistent business name, address and phone across directories, plus real reviews.
- Digital PR: Stories, data and expert quotes that earn coverage from real publications.
FAQs About Top SEO Companies in USA
Which is the best SEO company in the USA?
There is no single best SEO company for everyone. Large brands often look at enterprise agencies like Seer Interactive, Ignite Visibility, Victorious or NP Digital. Local businesses do better with local or industry specialists, and online stores with ecommerce agencies. The best choice is the agency with proven results for businesses like yours.
How was this list of SEO agencies in the USA chosen?
We started with agencies that appear often in public directories like Clutch, DesignRush and UpCity, industry roundups and search results. Then we checked each agency’s own website in 2026 to confirm it is active, offers SEO and has a US headquarters. We removed agencies that closed, merged or could not be confirmed. The list is not a paid ranking.
Is this a ranked list?
No. The numbers only help you read and count the list. Agencies are grouped by type, and the order inside each group does not mean one agency is better than another.
How much does it cost to hire an SEO company in the USA?
It depends on your goals, site size, industry and how much work is included. Most agencies use monthly retainers, project fees, hourly consulting or packages. Ask several agencies to price the same scope so you can compare fairly.
How long does it take to see SEO results?
Google’s own guidance says SEOs usually need four months to a year to make improvements and see possible benefits. You may see early signs, like better indexing and small ranking gains, in the first few months.
Can an SEO company guarantee first page rankings?
No. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. An agency that guarantees rankings is a red flag. A good agency will promise clear work, honest reporting and a plan tied to your business goals.
Should I hire a local SEO company near me?
It helps if you want to meet in person or need someone who knows your local market. But most of the agencies in this list work with clients across the US. Focus first on experience in your industry and business size, then on location.
Do SEO companies also help with AI search like ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Many now do. Look for agencies that talk about GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization), and ask how they measure AI visibility. Good AI search work builds on strong SEO basics: clear content, structured data, a strong brand and trusted mentions.
Final Thoughts
The top SEO companies in the USA are not one size fits all. A national agency, a law firm specialist and a Shopify SEO team are all “top” in their own lane. Use the group tables to find your lane, the region table to see who is near you, and the questions and red flags in this guide to test each agency.
Shortlist three to five agencies, ask each for a clear 90 day plan, compare them on the same scope, and pick the one that explains its work in plain words and ties it to your real business goals. That simple process will do more for your results than any ranking list.
